LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The 8th IPPA World Congress on Positive Psychology is taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre, situated on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
In Canada and across what indigenous peoples know as Turtle Island, it has become common practice to offer land acknowledgements. This recognition is not just a formality. Take a moment to appreciate the meaning behind the words that are used:
- Traditional: recognizes lands traditionally cared for and/or occupied by First Nations and other indigenous peoples.
- Ancestral: recognizes land that is handed down from generation to generation.
- Unceded: refers to land that was not turned over to the Crown (government) by a treaty or other agreement.
As you embark on your journey in Vancouver, we encourage you to learn about the history of this land and to honor its original inhabitants. Reflect on the gifts received, on life given by the earth and water, and on the great benefits shared by the land and too often at the exclusion of its indigenous peoples.
