Novel ways for using art-based interventions to enhance wellbeing: Insights from alumni of positive psychology programmes (#675)
Background
Pawelski (2020) encouraged researchers to develop new positive psychology interventions (PPIs). One group of interventions not usually discussed in the context of PPIs are art-based interventions, even though a recent systematic review demonstrated that they enhance human flourishing (Shim et al., 2021).
Aims
This research aimed to identify novel art-based interventions that can be practised to enhance wellbeing.
Method
A series of focus groups were conducted with 14 participants who use art-based interventions daily. Data were analysed using Inductive Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2021). Themes were identified at the semantic level, focusing on the explicit meanings of peoples’ discourse.
Results
Four themes emerged (1) I am not an artist, but I engage in arts in my daily life, (2) What counts as arts?, (3) Arts as a PPI, (4) MAPP impact on engagement with arts.
Conclusion
This presentation will discuss how practitioners can use art-based interventions in coaching and their individual practice to improve their wellbeing
