Background

 

In 2013, the National Standard of Canada on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace was released. It was the first of it’s kind in the world and it influenced changes around the globe. This ground breaking work has inspired advances in policy, research, regulations and practice in many countries during the last decade and accelerated Canadians workplaces to prioritize and create psychologically healthy and safe workplaces. 

Aims

 This panel will explore what’s happening now, emerging trends in workplaces, key risks and challenges and where the future of work may be headed.

Method

The personal experiences of the panel include the manager of the Technical Committee which developed the standard, the co-chair of the technical committee and a practictioner of psychological health and safety initiatives, a committee member who helped represent the interests of unions  and the person at the Mental Health Commission of Canada responsible for oversight of the case study for implementation of the standard and part of the development of international standards for psychological health and safety at work.

Results

 International perspectives on the impact of psychological health and safety in workplaces around the world.

Conclusion

 The introduction of psychological health and safety as responsibility of employers has shaped changes to policy, processes and practices around the world. 10 years ago, each of the panelists was invovled in the development of the national standard in Canada and each has spent a decade involved in the impact. This session will help explore where we are headed.
