Sustainable Leadership: Surviving or Thriving in the C-Suite? (#186)
While burnout was initially considered as being specific to the caring professions, recent studies have demonstrated that this syndrome can develop in any occupational groups and that the prevalence of burnout is a "growing concern r individuals, organizations, and society". (Valsania, Laguia, and Moriano, 2022).
Against the backdrop of the ever-increasingly uncertain world, driven by growth and progress, with unpredictable financial markets, supply-chain disruptions, and recruitment challenges, employees and leaders are under more pressure than ever, often making it feel nearly impossible to sustain well-being (their own as well as their employees) and business performance at the same time.
It is therefore perhaps not surprising that more than 70% of C-suite executives are considering quitting their jobs in search of a role that better supports their well-being, more than 80% believe their workplaces are not doing enough to support employee wellbeing and 89% consider improving their well-being "a top priority" for the year ahead (Deloitte, 2022).
In this interactive workshop, Charlotte will build on burnout research and theories (Bakker & de Vries, 2021; Wiseman, Jacob, & Belowski, 2021; Maslach & Leiter, 2014; Dutton, Workman & Hardin, 2014), as well as adding data from her own fieldwork working in organisations to offer a new practical framework of Sustainable Leadership. This simple three-prong approach to employee and leadership wellbeing (Volts, Values, and Vulnerability) has been successfully used at Amazon audible, Soho House, Bechtel, and other organisations to help reduce the risk of burnout in the workplace, promote recovery from burnout, and support employees to optimise their well-being and performance, when the pressure us on.
While burnout has been dubbed an epidemic, it is not an inevitable syndrome. This workshop will give leaders, Coaches and HR professionals the tools to ensure their clients can not only survive the pressure of the workplace, but thrive in a VUCA world.
