Curwyn Mapaling is registered as a clinical psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA: PS 0144673) and the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF Practice Number: 0934186). He completed his BPsych, honours equivalent degree, at the then Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Immediately thereafter he went on to pursue a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and Community Counselling at Stellenbosch University where he was trained primarily in person-centred, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioural approaches to psychotherapy. For his internship, he enrolled in the University of Cape Town Clinical Psychology Internship Programme. He completed his internship at the Lentegeur Psychiatric Hospital, where he worked in the Adult Therapeutic Unit, Forensic Ward, Child and Family Unit, Intellectual Disability Services, Outpatient Department, and the Mitchell’s Plain Day Hospital. Thereafter, he gained invaluable experience spanning across various fields outside of traditional psychology. These include Higher Education Publishing, Academic Advising and Freelancing before returning to psychology to complete an extended internship at the Nelson Mandela University Missionvale Community Psychology Centre. As a community service psychologist, he served three community clinics (Middle Terrace Clinic, Settlers Day Hospital, and Port Alfred Town Clinic), and the specialised Maximum Security Unit at Fort England Psychiatric Hospital where he was responsible for case managing state patients and assessing fitness and responsibility in forensic observation patients. His passion lies in community and positive psychology. From 2017-2021, he served as an executive committee member of the Community and Social Psychology (CaSP) Division of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA). After a short stint as a psychologist at Nelson Mandela University, Curwyn is currently employed as the youngest senior lecturer in Psychology at the North-West University where his responsibilities include being Programme Coordinator, Departmental Research Administrator, and committee member of the Human Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee (HSSREC).
